CAMS-71 Policy support
CAMS-71 'Policy support' is aimed at decision-makers. The CAMS-projects look at atmospheric chemical composition, with an emphasis on air quality and aerosol emissions (particulate matter). This is relevant for decision makers who are concerned with air quality in cities and the need to take action.
CAMS-71 tailors products for policy makers. If for example there is poor air in Paris, CAMS-71 will tell where the poor air is coming from. Is it coming from a neighbouring country or from internal sources within Paris? CAMS-71 makes calculations that show this, and in addition what measures can be taken to improve the air at short notice.
The service allows the users to click on all the capitals of Europe and bring up where (according to the model) the pollution comes from. This is useful for decision makers. If for example it can be seen that a large portion of the polluted air is coming from abroad, measures will not have to be taken in Oslo. And if the source is local, CAMS-71 will give an indication of whether the pollution is caused by traffic, industry or other sources.
Ideally, the service would be automated, but for the time being it also requires manual corrections. It is the EMEP model that is used to make the calculations. The work is led by Ineris in Paris (ineris.fr) in collaboration with, among others, MET, NILU and the Dutch TNO. MET has 40 years experience in calculating where pollution, such as acid rain, comes from (source matrix) through the EMEP programme, and this was decisive in us getting a central role in the project.
The project will finance approx one position at MET.
