Courses in weather observation

We organise courses in weather observation every winter/spring and autumn. These are required courses for personnel making observations in connection with helicopter operations and providing information directly to helicopter pilots and/or helicopter companies This applies to both platforms and mobile installations on the Norwegian continental shelf.

We offer the following courses:

  • METAR 1: Basic skills, theory and practical training
  • METAR 2: Refresher course
  • Synop Ship 1: Basic Course
  • Synop Ship 2: Refresher course

The courses are based on the regulations concerning Aviation weather services, appendix 3 - Requirements for qualifications and training, which can be found on Lovdata.

METAR2 - Periodic specialist update (CPD)

This course is a mandatory annual refresher course for all personnel who

  • make METAR weather observation reports for helicopter operations and/or for AVINOR/The Norwegian Meteorological Institute
  • have taken the METAR1 basic training exam, theory and practical part 

The course is conducted in one day. It includes both theoretical and practical updates and addresses any changes in regulations or practices.

For all courses, the following applies:

Qualifications: Good general education (secondary), desired experience of a maritime environment, aviation environment or similar 

Registration: ASAP and no later than 14 days before the course starts. Binding registration.

Cancellation: When cancelling a course place after the expiry of the deadline, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute will require payment of half the course fee. 

Participants: We reserve the right to cancel courses that do not have enough participants. If the stated course date is not suitable, we can arrange alternative dates provided that a minimum of four participants register for each course. 

The course fee includes course materials, lunch, coffee/mineral water etc.
