International collaboration
There are international meteorological collaborations on observations, data sharing, weather forecasts, and satellites.
ECMWF - the European Weather Forecasting Centre
The main task of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in Reading, England, is to develop numerical models for creating weather forecasts up to ten days ahead and distribute these to its member countries. The development of methods for seasonal forecasting is a new focus area at the center. ECMWF is highly active in the development of artificial intelligence-based weather forecasting models.
EUMETSAT - the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological SatellitesEUMETSAT is a Western European organization responsible for the operation and utilization of meteorological satellites. Through geostationary satellites and satellites in polar orbit, EUMETSAT monitors weather, climate, oceans, land, and the composition of the atmosphere. The organization provides essential data for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and disaster management. Collaboration through EUMETSAT enables European countries to maintain a network of satellites that deliver accurate and reliable satellite information, contributing to the protection of lives and property from extreme weather events.
EUMETNET - the Network of European Meteorological Services
EUMETNET is a network of national European meteorological institutes that supports the sharing of resources and expertise, increasing the efficiency and outcomes of its member organizations. Through this collaboration, the national meteorological institutes in Europe gain access to more data and greater capacity to utilize this data for the benefit and protection of the population.
WMO - The world meteorological organisation
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is the authoritative voice of the UN system on weather, water, and climate. Since weather, climate, and the hydrological cycle know no national boundaries, international cooperation at a global level is essential for providing weather forecasts, monitoring and understanding climate change, and operational hydrology. WMO facilitates such international collaboration among its 193 member states and territories.
